D.A.R.E

This term we had Constable Julie come into school and teach us about the D.A.R.E programme. D.A.R.E stands for Drugs, Alcohol Responsibility Education. She taught us about drugs, what the consequences and effects of drugs are and how to say no to them. Something interesting that I learnt was how many disgusting chemicals there are in cigarettes (over 4000). I also found it very interesting when Constable Julie showed us the cigarette in a bottle and how badly they affect our lungs. An important thing that she taught us was how to say no to drugs and the consequences of taking/dealing drugs.

Kate, Ellie, Hannah and Jessica ran joyfully around the play area, exploring and making up games. “Who wants to play tag?” Jessica asked, hopefully. “I do!” cried Ellie. “Me too!” “I guess so.” Hannah mumbled, not a big fan of the game. With that they began. They all ran around, squealing and giggling hysterically, scattering themselves around the green grass; trying to avoid the contagious tag of Jessica’s touch. Jessica lunged towards Hannah in an attempt to reach out and tag her. “I’m gonna’ get you!” joked Jessica, “Oh no you’re not!” Hannah laughed. She sprinted away, not looking where she was going. Her feet ran free-willingly, trying to escape Jess’ tag; everything was a blur of colours. Something Hannah didn’t see, however, was the rock that sat silently and sneakily in front of her, or how close she was to the forbidden swamp. Squelch, crash, smash. Hannah’s foot twisted around inhumanly as it was stopped by the rock, although her body kept moving onwards. Everything swirled around her in a mass of colourful landscape as her skull smashed down into the swamp and hit the hard ground. Suddenly everything was black. “What should we do?” Jessica asked. “How should I know? I don’t know what to do!” “Good idea.” Ellie said, sarcastically. “Where am I?” cried Hannah. Her voice echoed around the walls of this red dungeon. “What is this place?” The walls glowed majestically. She was drowned in a pool of fear and there seemed to be no way to the top. Hannah heard foot-steps, and she dreaded finding out where they were coming from. “Hello, my dear. I am Mr. Jigaboo, and I will be your ‘tour guide’ for today.” His voice slithered but in a friendly sort of way. He looked like a cross between a vampire and a ghost - a ghostpire. His eyes glowed like the walls of this strange place. “H-h-hello,” Hannah stuttered, “Where am I? What is this place? how did I get here?” “‘This place’ is purely a state of mind. When people fall unconscious they often experience strange unfamiliar worlds, and for you, this is it. Also, the things that you fear most will be the things that you encounter in your stay here, so think brave. It’ll help.” “Right... so none of this is real? I’m just imagining it? I’m not really here, like a dream? But it feels so real.” “Exactly, except you will remember it more vividly than a dream when you wake up. It’ll be like you really experienced it.” Hannah thought that ‘Mr. Jigaboo’ reminded her of someone, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She took a step further into the circular room; and as she moved it looked like the walls were moving in and out, around in circles, in every direction, like an optical illusion. “So, shall we begin your ‘tour’?” “I guess so...” she was hesitant, but supposed it wouldn’t be any worse than the real world. The tour took around 20 minutes, or it felt like that. By the end, it felt like they had travelled a whole lot more than they obviously had, and all Hannah wanted to do was lie down and sleep. “So, where will I be ‘staying’?” Hannah asked, hoping wherever it was, it would have a comfortable bed. “Oh, just over here.” Mr. Jigaboo said, gesturing to a door situated slightly to their left with his hand. Hannah noticed that his hand resembled a mitten, more than a hand with fingers. The room they stood in now glowed a mixture of green and yellow, and was shaped similarly to a hexagon. “Alright then, I’ll go and lie down.” “Off you go then. Oh, and by the way, your room-mate is a dragon.” Jigaboo said as he walked away. She couldn’t really see where she was going, her eyes were like patterned window pains that blurred everything around her. It felt to her as though to anyone looking in from the outside, they would look blank, like black boards. Hannah traipsed through the door and along the hallway that followed it. She dropped into bed like a corpse, her eyes snapping closed instantly. As she drifted off she was sailing into the world of dreams, of fantasy and imagination. A vague image slowly trickled into her mind of her friends back at the park, and Mr.Jigaboo standing closely behind them. The image got clearer and clearer until it felt like she was really there, waking up. A gush of warmth drowned Hannah’s body, pulling her out of comfortable sleep. She looked around, her eyes having to adjust to the fluorescent glow of the walls. As she twisted her head to get a better look of the room, she was taken a back to see a large dragon sitting, snoring sleepily in the corner. “Oh, hi there, Hannah.” the dragon said. “H-H-Hi,” Hannah stuttered; she had always had a strange phobia of dragons. She sat up, then got off the bed. “I feel so dizzy.” She said, trying to keep her balance. “Oh, that’s usually a sign that you’re about to leave this world, go home, back to the real world. Nice to meet you though.” the dragon said this with a half smile, but looking down at the ground. “Right... Nice to meet you t-.” She seemed to evaporate, waving goodbye to the dragon as she did so. “One more gone.” he said to himself, curling back into a ball in the corner. Hannah stretched as her eyes fluttered open and she was brought back to reality. She rubbed her head and sat up, looking around. Hannah was surrounded by four familiar faces: Kate, Ellie, Jessica, and standing slightly behind them was Mr. Jigaboo...

The Science Fair

This term (term two) we had the science fair. Every student had to prepare an experiment, perform the experiment, collect results, and display it on a board. I based my science fair project around the question: 'Which fruit or vegetable will power a clock for the longest amount of time?'. I really enjoyed conducting my experiment and gathering the results. Another enjoyable aspect of the science fair was mounting and displaying it on my board. Something that didn't go quite as planned was that all of my clocks went for much longer than I initially expected, and one of my Lemons moulded over. In the end I received the Student's Choice Award, which I was happy about.

The Events of Parihaka

Parihaka Summary Power Point Presentation

The Events of Parihaka

My opinion on the events of Parihaka:

I believe that Te Whiti and Tohu were inspirational because they refused to sink to the level of violence. Many people in their situation would have fought back, but they took the peaceful approach. I think that the reason why they advocated non-violence was because they were already in the right and knew that more war would achieve nothing, also they knew that the Europeans were in the wrong.  I think they actions of the Europeans were inhumane and cruel; and they just wanted power and land. The Maori's decisions were good and if they had fought back they could have caused more conflict and the war may have gone on much longer.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

Taylor Alison Swift was born on the 13th December 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania; though she was raised in Wyoming, Pennsylvania on a Christmas tree farm. Her mum is called Andrea Gardner and her dad is called Scott Kingsley Swift. Also, she has a younger brother called Austin. In her life she has helped and inspired many people.
At school, Taylor Swift was bullied so she used music to express herself. When Taylor was in fourth grade she won a national poetry competition with a three page poem called ‘Monster in my closet’. In Tennessee she attended Hendersonville High School; though she was home-schooled for her junior and senior years. She earned her high school diploma in 2008.
Unlike many other stars, Taylor wasn’t born into fame, she had to work for it. Taylor loved music and was determined to succeed. When she was ten years old, a computer repair man taught her three chords on guitar and she then taught herself the rest. She then wrote her first song: Lucky You (also when she was ten). At the age of eleven Taylor made her first trip to Nashville with a demo tape and gave one to every record company in town, only to be rejected. Though, evidently she did not let this stop her. In the same year Taylor was selected to sing the national anthem at the U.S Open Tennis Tournament! Taylor made so many trips to Nashville trying to get a recording deal that, when she was fourteen her family relocated there. When she was fifteen years old, Taylor rejected an offer from RCA Records because they wanted to keep her on an artist development deal. She now works with Big Machine Records.
Just like everybody else, Taylor was inspired by other people. Her maternal grandmother was an opera singer who she looked up to, although her taste in music did change to country. Her other inspirations included: Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes, Tina Tuner and Dolly Parton.
As we all know, fame and fortune can ruin a person, though it can also do the opposite. In her life, Taylor Swift has helped many people and supported many charities. In 2008 she donated all the proceeds from merchandise sales at the 2008 Country Music Awards to the Red Cross. Taylor has also donated £13,000 to the UK children in need cause. Additionally, Taylor donated a pair of signed, never worn, shoes to the Wish Upon a Hero foundation and, at the event of the Tennessee floods, gave $500,000 to flood relief! Eighteen year old Kevin McGuire was first diagnosed with leukemia at the age of thirteen, whilst undergoing intense treatment, he suffered many spinal taps and bone marrow transplants etc. He then had a relapse at the age of eighteen and still has it. Taylor Swift was his idol so his sister, Victoria McGuire, contacted Taylor and asked her is she would be Kevin’s date to his senior prom. Taylor then contacted them via Facebook saying: “Kevin, I’m so sorry, I can’t make it to your prom, but the ACM awards are coming up, would you be my date? Love Taylor.” He will now be flying up to L.A to be Taylor’s date to the ACM awards!
Taylor Swift, I believe, could be considered inspirational as she has kept going even when looking failure in the eye and had to work for her dream. She has helped and supported many people and charities. Taylor Swift is inspirational to me  because she helps people and is still real, she is not a barbie doll.
